Air pollution in the industrialized world has had big changes in the last 50 years. Until WW2 the most important polluting stuff was sulfur dioxide combined with crap from the use of fossil fuels in heat and power production. This criminal problem was partly solved by cleaner fuels, higher chimneys and gas cleaning technology in urban areas. But as one door opens another one shuts. The growth of petrol traffic, cars, buses etc, gave rise to emissions of nitrogen oxides and some really nasty organic compounds. However, the biggest problem, if you ask me, is now centered on 1. small particles and 2. organic compounds. Now the problem isn’t in one country but is a global crisis. Air pollutants can last for decades, and go over whole continents. And we get depletion of the ozone layer.
