When it comes to the matter of evaluating members' contribution to a group activity, people are of different opinions as all groupmates should be given the same grade or otherwise. I totally disagree with the notion that it is a good fashion to evaluate all members of a group as a whole for a number of reasons, among which unfairness of the method and its discouraging effect on students are the most conspicuous ones. The salient reason why giving all group participants the same mark is not a good method is that it may deter those who are diligent. We all know that it is likely for every single group of people to have some members who want to take advantage of others. With this in mind, provided that they know the final grade is the same for all members, regardless of their efforts, they find it as an opportunity to escape their responsibilities as they are sure there are others who may make up for them; failing that, others' score may suffer too. This is the reason why many hard-working students who try hard to get a good mark may deter from making their best in group projects as they see they can have more fun by taking less time on assignments, and their final marks might be the same. Thus, group activities that were supposed to stimulate learners, runs counter to the ways that were meant to, namely that promoting bad behaviors that may discourage them from learning their lessons. Another reason for the view is that it is not a fair way of assessing students. The underlying reason for using grades is to differentiate various individuals by their effort. The grades sometimes play a pivotal role in the future of learners as they may not be admitted in the college they are intended to apply. What makes them more important is that applicants are selected in comparison to others, which emphasizes individual appraisal of students in even group activities. In fact, teachers should always pay attention to their efforts in a comparative way to make sure the method is fair enough; something that does not happen on the condition that they are all given the same mark. To sum up, with the above in mind, it is not true that providing groups, not individuals, with a mark in group tasks is a good idea. It is because not only does it may deter students from working hard, but it also does not bring justice to the evaluation.
