I strongly believe that despite what profession one is in, developing a strong network can open door to
career opportunities and personal development.
Personally, the most effective methods I used for creating and maintaining professional relationships is through the use of social media. After graduating from university, LinkedIn in particular has been a powerful platform that enables me to connect with people who are in my profession and people who are in other professions.
Learning and taking advantage of how the LinkedIn Search Engine Optimization (SEO) works has allowed me to draw professionals from all over the world and build meaningful relationships.
I’ve been very proactive on LinkedIn, I’ve shared contents in my field, shared my achievements and participated in constructive discussion under post from professional organizations and individuals.
These approaches really help me when I meet some of my connections personally, it is easier to initiate conversation based on our previous online discussions.
Apart from social media I do love networking events which are face-to-face.
For instance, the Information Technology Society of Solomon Islands (ITSSI) events have been a great platform where I was lucky enough to build and grow a lasting relationship.
During these events I made every effort to meet everyone in the room and I receive good advice and learned insights into their company and career.
Another similar example is through my Volunteering efforts with the Rotaract Club of Honiara. Involving with this young group of people, allows me to network with Rotarians who are mostly owners of some of the big business here in the Solomon Islands. Constructive discussion with them led one of the Rotarian to hire me whenever there is a need for my skillset and another to offer me a Job opportunity.
