The World of Drugs, Legal or Illegal?
The World of Drugs, Legal or Illegal? 92Omw
Throughout the history of mankind there have been many types of drugs, from the most natural many years ago when it was not even known what they were, let alone what they generated, to the most artificial and addictive drugs today. The difference is that over the years, drug use is becoming more and more available, more is known about the effects, there are more people using them and the most important thing is that it has been normalized in an exaggerated way the consumption and reach to them. At the same time, with all these changes and new knowledge, the question has arisen as to why not legalize certain drugs or recognize them as good for health; this is where the dilemma and the different points of view come in. In relation to this, it is considered that drugs are the main cause of addiction, so the legalization of drugs should not be an option or a reality anywhere
Generally, drug addictions begin mainly in adolescents since they are the most easily influenced by wanting to "try" or feel something different. This addiction occurs in a gradual way since in some cases they are prescription drugs, or in other cases, they are people who consume more and more drugs becoming more addicted. The main causes of drug addictions are the following: normalization in conjunction with alcohol, social pressure, self-medication, stress, avoidance of negative feelings, boredom, fads and many others. The consequences that addicts can suffer range from depression, mood swings, different behavior, weight loss, dilated pupils to financial problems and poor academic or professional performance. One of the main problems of drug use is the accessibility that any child, adolescent or adult can have to them. Studies have shown that about 59% of people think it is easy to find illicit drugs and that of 7, 800 people who try drugs for the first time, 50% are teenagers.
Speaking from a more specific and technical point of view, three types of drugs are known depending on the way they interact with our bodies. Firstly, there are the depressants, which affect the function of the central nervous system by slowing it down, the relationship of signals among body and mind, the reaction to different situations, attention and coordination. With this type of drug people might go from feeling relaxed and calm, to vomiting and death. The information refers to drugs such as: alcohol, benzodiazepines, cannabis, GHB, ketamine and heroin. We also have hallucinogenic drugs such as cannabis, ketamine, LSD, various mushrooms and phencyclidine. They distort the truth of things, more than anything else, as they affect the main human senses and greatly affect reality. What people "feel" is confusion, not knowing where they are, dizziness, memory impairment, fear and aggression. And finally, stimulants are the "most common" drugs such as nicotine, caffeine, cocaine, amphetamines and ecstasy. What they do is to accelerate the messages that the body receives and gives changing your heartbeat, your temperature, pressure, hunger, agitation; they make them feel more awake, but they may cause several disorders from panic attacks to convulsions. Taking into account the information above, the drugs with the highest rate of use are: alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, methamphetamines, cocaine, heroin and non-prescription drugs.
According to the figures from the "esglobal" website, in 2015 the countries with the highest rate of drug use were: the United States, Thailand, China, Iran, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and Australia. This data is related to the argument of the webpage "CityWide" in their study in 2016 in which they present the countries that have already legalized certain drugs, among them examples such as: Argentina, Australia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Russia, South Africia, Spain, Some places of USA among others. These data provide a relationship between legalization and the places with the highest consumption.
Both good and bad things must be taken into account in the legalization of drugs in order to have both perspectives. As pros, it is said that by legalizing drugs, they would be regulated, they would be taxed, some would have medical use and it would reduce violence in certain sectors. On the other hand, among the negative factors, people could try them even at an early age, the black market would be even bigger, drug tourism would increase, addictive behavior would be encouraged and in certain places drug trafficking would affect the security of the population.
A person is considered addicted when they no longer have control over what they do, or use in a harmful way. Therefore, when someone is already in this state, they must have a recovery process that adjusts to their addiction. It is a process of change with addicts that may improve their health and benefit the state of their social life. “There are six known treatments to combat addictions among which are: Detoxification, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Contingency Management, 12-Step Facilitation and Treatment with Medication” (Corinna Underwood, 2020).
Finally, to prevent drug addiction, in spite of two routes can be taken. The first is from the personal area and the education of the subject; know how drug dependency is done, not be guided by social pressure, take care of mental health, know the risks of this situation and maintain a controlled life.
Due to all the above, I can conclude that the legalization of any type of drug should not even be an option, as despite the fact that the legalization of certain substances does have concrete benefits, most of the results are harmful. Sadly, we live in a society in which, although certain substances are allowed to help, we also tend to exploit others for pleasure or commerce at the expense of bad results. I believe that no young person should have easy access to substances that are harmful to health. drugs should not be legalized anywhere in the world, in spite of the fact that there exists people with control and education. It is not only a matter of learning to control, it directly affects someone's capacity to decide once the drugs have been consumed. The sequels that these chemical substances leave have been studied and furtherly proved that are irreversible, leaving an addict with many other issues that would need to be treated by the government, causing a massive expense in things that can be avoided by keeping the drugs illegal. it is an issue of the utmost importance, so action must be taken, talk and act on the subject.
