The chart provides information about the changing levels of home ownership in parts of the
UK over a 93-year period. Overall, throughout the time, the amount of rented
accommodation fell sharply, while the amount of owned accommodation rose equally
dramatically.
The first point to note is that between 1918 and 2001, the number of households in owned
accommodation roughly trebled. To be more exact, the amount went up from around a
quarter in 1918, to just over two-thirds in 2001.
Secondly, at the same time, the percentage of household who rented their homes almost
halved. More precisely, people living in rented accommodation dropped from around just
over three-quarters in 1918 to just under a third 2001.
Finally, there was a small change in the trend in 2011, where the trends reversed. Although
this change was significant, there were still more than twice as many households living in
owned rather than rented accommodation, that is, 64% and 36%, respectively.
