Rewarding a student is one of the most common practices of a teacher to encourage their students to perform better in class. Some people think that only student who achieve the best results should be rewarded and others think that it is better to reward a student who has shown improvement. While I agree that the best students should be rewarded, I believe that students who shown improvement should be rewarded as well, albeit less than the ones who performed the best. Firstly, rewarding students who showed improvement could encourage them to do better again next time. It is beneficial for the classroom as it could trigger a chain reaction, effecting the whole student body to work harder to get the reward. There is always room for improvement, so students may feel like there'd be endless rewards, it's beneficial for further growth for every student in the class. However, it is important to note that the best students worked as hard as the students who showed improvement. Turning a blind eye to their efforts of staying the best will be detrimental for their future performance. The most excellent students may lose determination and feel disturbed towards the biased actions. Because to them, their hard-work is not acknowledged. Since only rewarding one type of students couldn't be effective, I believe rewarding both types of students could be the key to a high performing class. Rewarding is a way to promote competition, so I believe the winner, to which I mean the best students, should be rewarded the most. And for the improving students, they should be rewarded as well for their dedication, but their reward shouldn't be able to compare to the scale of the reward for the best students. In conclusion, while competition could be promoted using rewards, choosing the subject for the rewards is very important as it could affect the whole class. If a teacher could understand and acknowledge every member of the class, the overall performance would skyrocket more than ever.
