Some people believe that children at secondary school should be streamed, i. e. taught in classes according to ability, rather than being taught in mixed-ability classes. Do you think the advantages of streaming children at secondary school outweigh the disadvantages? NnWR0
It is opined by some individuals that grouping secondary level pupils based on their faculty is more efficient and beneficial rather than educating them in mixed-ability classes. There are a number of merits to this streaming approach, however, I presume that drawbacks outweigh beneficial sides. On the one hand, separating children into groups up to their talent brings convenient ambiance for mentors. Therefore teaching similar level of students puts tutors at ease as they do not need to explain a particular theme over and over till the last pupil of the group understands. As a result tutors would be able to continue at a consistent pace owing to productive studying environment. Moreover, adolescents who have similar capability are able to motivate and help each others in finding solutions to complex tasks by working together. Additionally, they may discuss about the theme and teach one another on a particular topic. It allows students to improve their teamworking and communicational skills as well as intelligence. Thus teaching pupils in a streamed group is efficacious. On the other hand, I content streamed classes have some detrimental effects on other students who study in low-levelled groups. The reason is that they face discrimination and peer pressure as a repercussion of bullying by smarter ones. As a result, studens with less ability lose confidence and undermine their self-esteem. Furthermore, streamed-ability children would become professional only in one sphere and can not cope with other skills. It has an adverse effect both on their futuristic career opportunities and lives. This means that they lose chances of selection while applying jobs compared to multi-ability students. For these reasons, children should study together with others. In conclusion, grouping children up to their capacity may be advantageous, but I presume that it also comes with some shortcomings like discrimination and underestimation among youngsters.
