The question of whether an individual's intelligence is due to nature or nurture is widely debated. This essay will discuss both opposing views.
On the one hand, genes transmitted from both parents to their offsprings during conception determine their intelligent quotient. The chromosomes in the child's gene contains the phenotypic traits of both parents such as eye color, skin color, intelligent, dentition and facial appearance. These phenotypic traits can not be altered and this trend is noticeable from generation to generation. Therefore, if both parents has a high intelligent quotient, the offspring has 100 % of having the same intelligent level. For example, the research carried out by Biologists in the University of London among school children of aged 5-13 years reveals that children who perform well in school has the gene inherited from their parents whom had display the same cognitive abilities at this same age range. Hence, nature is a key factor that determines an individual's intelligence level.
In contrast, it's of the opinion that environment helps to nurture the trait of intelligence in an individual. Some factors in the environment such as nutrition, good school, adequate reading materials can help to develop a child cognitive abilities. Though a child can have the gene for intelligent but if it is not in the right environment, this can be altered. For example, a child who does not eat a balance meal at home will disrupt the functioning of the brain cells and consequently affect the child's intelligent level. Hence, the environment serves as a stimulating factor for intelligent.
In conclusion, I think that the right environment is the main factor that determines intelligent because it is positively stimulating the gene of intelligence in a child.
