Parts of a Neuron and its Functions
Parts of a Neuron and its Functions 81lKP
The diagram here illustrates the components of a neuron and the basic functions of its various parts.
As with any other cell, the neuron has a cell body called the soma. The soma extends into thin branch like objects. These branches are called dendrites. The key function of a dendrite is to receive messages from other cells and pass them down.
The soma connects to the axon, which is shaped like a stem and contains a group of rectangles, connected like a train. The axon carries the messages from the dendrites to other parts of the body like muscles, glands, or other neurons.
The message is sent via the Axon using electrical signals called Action Potential, and the sheath that covers the axons that helps speed the neural impulses is called the Myelin Sheath.
The bottom of the neuron is comprised of branch-like objects called terminal buttons. As the name, "terminal" suggests, they are junctions that connect dendrites from another neuron.
