More and more young people from wealthy countries are spending a short time in communities in poorer countries doing unpaid work such as teaching or building houses. Why? Who benefit from this, the community or these young people? PX1m2
There are a number of factors that explain why youngsters in developed countries go to communities in poorer countries for a short time doing volunteer work such as teaching or building houses. Personally, I believe that this tendency has positive effects on both the community and these young people. There are some reasons why doing volunteer work in underdeveloped nations is becoming increasingly popular among young people from rich nations. The first reason is that they can accumulate experiences in their fields while volunteering in other countries. For example, young people can have more knowledge about nature and society in other countries like weather, environment, culture, cuisine and architecture there. The second reason is that due to the development of media, the youth are able to update information and images of areas suffering from natural disasters, poverty or war, which need significant relief from the outside world. I believe that this trend has positive effects on both the young volunteers and community. Firstly, when these volunteers help people in poorer countries, they can improve their social experience which plays an important part in their future career. For instance, teaching English for children in poorer countries or taking care of elderly people is a valuable experience for people who want to become a doctor or teacher. Secondly, when the community in poorer countries have support from young volunteers like teaching or building houses, they can have better living conditions and educational opportunities. In conclusion, there are many reasons why doing volunteer work in underdeveloped nations is becoming increasingly popular among young people from rich nations. I believe that this trend has positive effects on both the young volunteers and community.
