King oedipus and aristotalian tragedy
King oedipus and aristotalian tragedy pD270
Oedipus starts the play as the prince of Corinth who left his city behind in fear of fulfilling an atrocious prophecy that condemned him with killing his father and marrying his mother. Upon his arrival to Thebes, he encounters the Sphinx that has been threatening the city for a while and ends up killing it after solving its riddle with his wits. The people of Thebes then crown him as their new king by giving him Jocasta, the widow of the former king Laius, as a wife with whom he ends up conceiving four children. Unfortunately, peace is not fully achieved because in the few following years, Thebes gets engulfed by a plague that is caused by the existence of the king’s killer inside the city. Oedipus, being ignorant of the truth, insists on finding the killer and invites Teiresias the blind prophet to ask for his help. After a heated encounter, Teiresias tells Oedipus that he is the killer that he seeks and that he is of no Corinthean origin but rather Thebean born. Oedipus being mad and inflexible chooses to blame Creon, Jocasta’s brother, of treason and orders Teiresias out of the scene. The truth is then slowly revealed by the arrival of a messenger from Corinth who reassures Oedipus that Polybus and Merope are no kin to him so he needn’t worry about the prophecy. But instead of casting the matter aside, Oedipus decides to further investigate. He interrogates the shepherd who served Laius and forces him to reveal the truth, all despite Jocasta’s pleads for him to stop. After the revelation of the truth, Oedipus couldn’t bear the burden of his sins and decides to blind himself after he found Jocasta’s body hanging from the ceiling of her room. Creon had no choice but to accept Oedipus’s request to be exiled.
