In the past few years, when the COVID-19 pandemic started, online learning has been a new option for students in Thailand. From my experience, there are numerous benefits from this type of learning, but on the other hand, learning online also has many problems.
First, when I started learning online, it took me more time to complete assignments due to not being able to ask my teachers directly when I had a question. When learning in a physical classroom, students don't have to deal with a poor internet connection, trouble submitting assignments, and other problems when learning online. Additionally, when students don’t understand the homework, it takes them some time to figure it out themselves than asking their teachers.
Another difficulty is for children who don’t have the proper devices for online learning. Online learning requires a secure internet connection, electricity, and a computer with the software needed to join meetings and submit assignments. Some of my friends used their mobile phones to study and had many problems downloading applications and solving different issues within their devices.
Finally, I have discovered that it is easy to lose motivation while learning online. Sitting in front of the computer screen is much less engaging than in a physical classroom with other students and teachers. Without physical interaction between students and teachers, it is easy for them to become unmotivated and easily distracted. Many of my friends switched off their webcams and did other things behind the camera, such as sleeping or playing video games. Once, I also fell asleep during a boring science lesson. It is easy to lose concentration and become less motivated to listen to the metal thing in front of us.
All in all, learning online is a new way of studying within schools and universities. Along with the many benefits such as ease of access, lowered costs, and flexibility, it also has its downsides. While learning online, students take more time completing assignments, have problems with their devices, and lose motivation. I believe that learning in a physical classroom is more effective than in a digital one.
