One of the most topical issues in modern society is that all modern buildings have similar construction and urban areas through the world are becoming more and more similar. While some think that this similarity has a negative effect, others feel that this trend is a good thing. In this essay, I will examine the reasons why this phenomenon is occurring and give my overall opinion. There are a number of reasons why all modern buildings have nearly the same design and cities all over the world look alike. Perhaps the main reason is urbanization. This is because the migration of people from the countryside to cities leads to a lack of land in big cities, so all modern buildings need to be constructed higher to save land. Another reason is modernization. To elaborate, it is easy to see some modern facilities such as fitness centers and shopping malls in any city; therefore, it makes cities around the world look the same. In my opinion, I feel that the resemblance of all modern buildings and the similarity of cities around the world is a positive trend. Firstly, using modern construction technology saves money. To explain, modern buildings often use materials like concrete, steel, and glass for construction and these materials are cheaper than wood or stone. Furthermore, people can have the best quality of life with modern design. For example, nightlife become lively because of lights from tall buildings, shopping centers that stay open twenty-four hours, and entertainment centers with cinemas and coffee shops. In conclusion, the growing similarity of all modern buildings and cities throughout the world is a topic which is relevant to modern society. In my view, this trend is beneficial because it makes city dwellers’ lifestyle become active and modern. If people can balance between modern construction and traditional design, it will provide more magnificent buildings and wonderful cities.
