In my opinion, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a colonial tool that perpetuates inequality and reinforces Western cultural dominance.
One of the main reasons I believe this is because the IELTS exam is designed and administered by institutions in the English-speaking world, namely the British Council, Cambridge Assessment English, and IDP Education. This means that the exam is based on the linguistic and cultural norms of these institutions, which are largely derived from the dominant Western English-speaking countries.
As a result, the IELTS exam often favors individuals who come from English-speaking backgrounds and are familiar with Western cultural norms.
