Why did Brexit take place?

In recent years, Brexit has been one of the most shocking international events. Meanwhile, it remains controversial, even within the United Kingdom. Among the profound reasons which stimulated Brexit is "an English nationalist movement, ". From my perspective, it is undeniable that the whole process of Brexit involved nationalism and globalization, which is also why most British voters chose to leave the European Union. To begin with, globalization is one of the reasons behind Brexit and why most people decided to leave the EU. The voting result of the 2016 referendum demonstrates a degree of “fear” towards globalization. According to the voting result, younger generations and more educated people intended to remain in the EU, whereas older generations and less educated people intended to leave the EU. This distinction reflects that the former group embraces much more globalization, and the latter is vice versa. Regarding the British who voted to leave the EU, one of their main concerns is the fear of immigration and asylum-seekers, as they thought that immigrants could exacerbate their country. Moreover, some global events took place before the Brexit referendum, such as the refugee crisis in 2015 and the financial crisis, which partly affected the voting result since these events had aggravated their pessimistic view on globalization, in particular when it comes to the increasing level of xenophobia. Furthermore, nationalism is also a significant reason for Brexit. Considering the historical background of the UK, it had a predominant role in the past. Therefore, the British, especially the older generations, still recognize “British sovereignty” as an advantageous thing and ethnocentrism for their nation. Subsequently, they voted to leave the EU in order to “take back control”. Nevertheless, the result was not ideal. There is still turbulence in the UK concerning Brexit because Brexit has not effectively benefitted the British; however, it has caused some predicaments in terms of economics and politics. In conclusion, Brexit is the outcome of various factors which are interconnected. For some British, immigration and globalization are the major considerations which led to Brexit. However, in my opinion, these are inevitable in the modern era. As a result, nationalism is the most fundamental reason which caused some British to fear globalization and to leave the EU.
