Maintaining his self-respect and right to health care, how will you ease his anxiety? 92lMW
In the case that I work with an extremely anxious client, living alone, who cannot manage his activities of daily living because of his illness, I will do the following steps considering the client’s DIPPS to ease his anxiety. First of all, I should be professional. In the textbook “Mosby's Canadian Textbook for the Support Worker” (Sorrentino, Remmert & Wilk, 2018), authors suggest that healthcare workers can show their respect for clients through a positive attitude, appropriate appearance, and behaviour. In the other words, the client will feel respected because of my well-groomed and acceptable speech. The self-introduction is also important that helps me get into the conversation with the client. I must let him know who I am and which organization I work for. Next, I will explain his right to health care. Because government insures and covers health care services for citizens, he has the right to be assisted by the system. One of the benefits is that he might get better when he is taken care of at home. Then, I will specify the reasons why he needs my assistance. As the textbook mentions, home care workers provide care for those who need help such as disabilities or seniors. Due to debilitating arthritis in his knees, he does not have strength enough to self-assist, and this will be dangerous for him. I play the role of an assistant, so I will support him as independently as possible. That means, considering his needs and his safety, I will provide care with his permission. Lastly, I need to clarify the care plan. I must interpret the advantages and disadvantages of the plan as well. Thus, I will let him decide if he wants my assistance or not. Home care would not be helpful and meaningful if he does not agree. In conclusion, based on his DIPPS – Dignity, Independence, Preferences, Privacy, and Safety – the first impression is vital that the client believes in your support so that he can feel relaxed for the next steps.
