How Useful are TED in rescuing sea turtles.
How Useful are TED in rescuing sea turtles. QBqYb
Recently there has been a debate on the number of sea turtles that are caught killed while shrimp fishing. More specifically, the writer puts forth the idea that Turtle Excluder Device or TED is a good solution to this problem. In the lecture, the professor is quick to point out that there are certain flaws with writers’ claims. In fact, the professor claims that TED are in no way a viable solution and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in reading passage.
First and foremost, the author of the reading passage states that TEDs help big turtle escape by installing a metal rim that only small shrimps can pass through. Some professionals in the same field, however, stand opposition to this claim. In listening, for example, the professor states that some of many small and mid- size turtles are also caught through this barrier. Logger head and leather bag are species of sea turtles which are smaller and are easily caught by the TEDs.
One group of scholars, represented by the writer, thinks that Shrimp Turtle Law have ensured that all the shrimp catchers have TEDs installed in their boats. Of course, though, not all experts in the fields believe this to be accurate. Again, the speaker specifically addresses this point when he states TED cause less shrimp to be caught leading to many catchers not using them. Also, there is no coast guard or police when they are in open sea far from shore, so they could easily not use them without any consequence.
Finally, the author brings his argument to a close by suggesting that USA and other European countries only import shrimps from verified TED using Shrimp catchers, forcing other catchers to also adopt and use TED. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes an issue with this claim by contending that the paper work used to verify TED using shrimp catcher is easy to forge and reproduce as they are not produced by one single country.
To sum up, both writer and the professor hold conflicting views about TED.
