The bar chart illustrates, in percentage, why native and non-native English speaking students learn a language, at a university in Australia.
Overall, the percentage of NNS learning a language is higher compared to NS. The most important reason why NS and NNS learn a language is to improve jobs prospects and the least is due to enjoyable reasons and to be important for studying respectively.
In terms of learning a language to improve job prospects, the percentage of NNS is over 90% while NS is 60%. The reasoning for the lower percentage is: important for studying and enjoyable which the values are over 60% for NNS and 20% for NS.
Furthermore, the percentage of learning a language to work or to travel is similar around 50% of NS learn it in order to work or travel as opposed to NNS which the percentage is exactly 90%.
For instance the amount of NS students who learn to improve personal development is over 10% more than the NS who want to improve own language. Although the percentage of the NNS is equal for these 2 points which is around 70%.
