To Human is Err. There is a proverb like that which we learnt from our childhood in school, often had to correct its grammar or found this in a fill in the blanks question paper. But seldom we thought what it really means in the pursuit of being perfect all these times.
No, I don’t want to justify any crime done by human so far. If I try to justify any crime, ill be supporting a rapist, a killer, a thief and what not! If today our topic is whether to agree with fixed punishment for criminals or considering their situation before giving any punishment, I would just go with the later. Because, nobody is born killer or thief. We never know what went through a thief while he was growing up or uprising his/her kids while meeting their ends meet. We cannot possibly realize what went through a killer while he received the same cold behavior from other people that made him this way and, in the end, he didn’t even blink his eyes during their murder. Or, when he killed a person, he was also threatened by the opposite person. Or, maybe he didn’t want to cause the murder at all and it was an accident!
There are also people who take bribes, molest or rape in every chance, misbehave and threatens the powerless and do well deserved punishment for crimes. Not everyone has the same situation behind their crimes. And for that very reason, their punishment should not be the same. Again, the punishment should be given realizing everyone’s background stories and facts rather than their power and money which strikes our society the most. Everyone should get a chance to talk and money or power should not be in the way of establishing a fair judgement and enforcement of law. Only then we can think of a society free of wrongdoings and unfairness.
