I intend to establish a career in the field of development upon my return. My short term goal for the first 1-2 years is to invest my new knowledge and skills as an instructor at An-Najah University in the recently accredited international relations program. I believe that transmitting my new knowledge to young people, especially in programs that are research oriented, will eventually contribute to a Palestinian-led development model. I will provide the program with an input representative of the youth to shape its structure in a student friendly manner that evokes their potential through tangible research. I have already built strong relationships with my university professors, and they encourage me immensely to go after this position upon my return.
Simultaneously, I will establish the initial ground for a project I am very passionate about, initiating a network connecting female food processors in vulnerable communities (mainly the Northern Jordan Valley-area C) with points of sale in cities. I met many amazing women trying to pave their own way by producing high quality food at small cooperatives; however, they lack marketing and networking skills. I plan on providing them with an online platform which they can use to communicate with points of sale. One possible partner who would support this idea is RWDS (Rural Woman Development Society), a local NGO with great experience in the field of economic empowerment; RWDS would benefit from my new skills and practical ideas. This project aligns with the UK government's goal to build economic prosperity, and it also aligns with the Ministry of Women's affairs strategic plan which highlights the importance of empowering women and bridging the labor force gap.
In 3-5 years, I plan to get back into the development sector in order to further enhance my skills and expand my network of personal connections. I will work as a project manager in an organization that aligns with my vision for economic empowerment. From my professional experience, this is an aspect most NGOs and CSOs are adopting as it is part of the global sustainable development goal "gender equality".
Five years post-graduation, I will have established my previously mentioned project on solid ground and people will have started to benefit from it. According to the DFID's most recent operational plan, the number of enterprises expected to report improved performance in annual sales or productivity as a result of their support is 250. I expect my project to increase this number by 25% during its first year of work, with the increase in annual sales being at least 20% (60 women to have working functional businesses and 20% increase in annual sales or productivity).
Within ten years of self-development and capacity building, I will have gained the sufficient experience to start my own nonprofit organization while I continue my academic research activities. The network will grow bigger, and I will be able to take it to the next level where it will have a clear contribution to providing a sustainable income for many Palestinian women.
