El Nino is the name of a warm ocean current that affects weather patterns on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. The diagrams compare normal conditions in the Pacific with El Nino conditions.

Overall, the two pictures illustrate imbalance between west and east pacific coasts, and in particular, the climate in Australia and Peru during both weather. Under non-El Nino conditions, strong trade winds blow from the Eastern Pacific, pushing both storm clouds as well as warm water westwards while the weak opposing winds blow from the Western Pacific. Thus, the climate in Australia is rainy, which provides an abundant supply of water for the growth of local vegetation. Meanwhile, the weather in Peru is sunny, that yields the cool and nutrient-rich water for the development of marine life. Under El Nino conditions, the west pacific experiences strong winds, whereas the east will face weak trade winds. Hence, the warm, nutrient-poor water and storm clouds flow direction is reversed, blocking the cool water from rising up. In Australia, that is why, there is so much sunshine without rain leading to drought; at the same time, in Peru, fisheries decreased due to the lack of essential nutrients in the water.
