courageous acts of the book, to kill a mocking bird Bd1A5
Courageous, the quality of being ready and willing to face terrible situations involving danger or pain. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, the characters fight through the tough situations they are faced with, and throughout all the troubles and trials they still keep fighting. Even when they knew there was a ninety nine percent chance they were going to lose, they kept fighting for what was right. It takes a lot of courage to keep going. The theme for the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, is the courageous acts the characters portray; Mrs. Dubose and Scout portray many courageous acts throughout the novel.
Mrs. Dubose shows this theme when she is trying to fight her morphine addiction. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, it states, “ I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do” (Lee 149). This shows how courageous Mrs. Dubose really was, even though she knew she was going to lose her battle with her addiction. She kept fighting hoping that maybe there was that one percent that she would fight off the addiction. People tend to give up and stop fighting in these situations, but Mrs. Dubose had enough courage to keep fighting for her life back. It is clear that Mrs. Dubose portrays the theme throughout the novel.
Scout also shows the theme when she runs out in front of the mob. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, it states, “I broke away from Jem and ran as fast as I could to Atticus” (Lee 202). Scout was very courageous in this situation because she saved her father from being hurt, and she could have been killed. Scout did not know any of the people she had run out in front of, and certainly did not know what their intentions were. Her quick acts of courage caused the mob to leave Atticus, and come to their senses that he was dad and Scout needed him. All in all, Scout portrays the theme in this intense situation.
Given these points, Mrs. Dubose and Scout show the theme of courageous acts throughout the entire novel. Mrs. Dubose's act of courage was when she was fighting her morphine addiction; she kept fighting knowing that she was probably going to lose her battle. Scout was courageous when she ran out in front of the mob to help her father. Scout risked her own life for her father’s life.
