Some studies have shown that as the amount of time spent on the internet increases, the amount of time spent interacting with other people physically decreases. As a result, some people believe that this might can have negative impacts on social interaction between people, rather than a viewing it as way to make communication with others all over the globe possible using the world wide web. Although it can be a two-sided argument, I strongly agree that negative side outweigh the positive side for many reasons. Starting with the positive side, the internet made our lives easier by making distant people less distant. This can affect our lives on different levels, including our work and social life. In the past, communicating with others was very complicated and time-consuming. For example, the only way to contact others in the past was using fax or letters, which used to take months to reach the receiver and then other months for the reply to reach the sender. Whereas today, we can send a simple message anywhere in the world via email, or any social media platform and have a reply as well, within just a matter of seconds. On the other hand, being dependent too much on the internet can affect our skills negatively especially our social skills. Not only our skills, but also our public speaking, problem-solving and many other skills. For example, if we only use the internet as a means of communication, with time, we will reach a certain point where our ability to interact with others in real life will decline. This means that people will normalize being isolated as they believe that they are more comfortable contacting others behind a screen rather than consuming their time and energy to actually interact with their peers, colleagues, friends, and family members. To sum up, although technological advancements including the internet possess lots of positive effects, we should also pay attention to the negative side of the story, by using the internet in moderations to maintain healthy social interactions in real life.
