Provided is an infographic illustrating the data related to the percentage of transported goods by four various transport modes in the UK over twenty-eight consecutive years, starting from 1974. Units are measured in tonnes.
Overall, it is evident that a major dominance belongs to the road, whereas pipeline experienced a downward trend throughout the period.
As regards road and water, they saw a significant growth compared to other modes in question. At the beginning of the period, they stood at 70 and approximately 40 million respectively. Road fluctuated moderately prior to growing to about 80 million in 1990. It increased to almost 100 million over the period given. Water rose to 55 million in 1982 and declined slightly to 50 million, it then grew significantly to 65 million in 2002.
When it comes to rail and pipeline, there was considerable increase in the proportion of the pipeline, while rail remained unchanged. In 1974, both of them stood at 40 and 5 million correspondingly. Rail witnessed a slight fluctuation; however, it remained over the given period. Pipeline rose noticeably to approximately 20 million in 1994, and it then maintained the same level.
