Work from home is the new paradigm in the age of pandemic

It was an excellent day for my friend when he got a job in his dream company. More important thing is that it was a turning point of his life because he was trying to get this job for such a long time and his tireless efforts brought this job to him. Because of pandemic, he was told to do work from home. In the beginning, he was very happy but he was not able to focus on work because of unavailability of separate room. In addition to that, he was feeling stressed all the time. At last, he ended up losing his job. Thus, work from home is essential in the age of pandemic but cannot be alternative of traditional work because it reduces the productivity of employees and builds mental health crisis.
Nowadays, the productivity of employees is affected very badly because of work from home. The main reason behind decreased efficiency of staff is the distractions caused by family and friends. Additionally, one cannot focus on his work because of lack of isolated room for work. As Nicholas Bloom, a senior fellow at Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research says “Many people I have been interviewing are now working in their bed-rooms or shared common rooms, with noise from their partners, family or roommates” (2020, para. 11).
Other than that, work from home is building a mental health crisis in workers. The people working from home feel lonely, depressed and isolated. As a result, it can “cause a surprising, even if relatively mild, deterioration of mental health” (Staglin, 2020, para. 2). Moreover, if they are not socializing with their fellows for a long time then it creates social gap between them and leads to mental illness. On top of that, it affects their creativity too. However, they can use their mobile phone for communication and socializing with the peers in this pandemic situation, but it is not a decent solution to reduce social gap in normal conditions.
Eventually, work from home is necessary in this crucial time but cannot replace traditional work spaces. Since it comes with a lot of problems like less productivity of clients, lack of creativity and health issues ranging from mild stress to severe mental illness, it is not a good paradigm of working. And at the end of the day, “it is health that is the real wealth, and not piece of gold and silver” (Mahatma Gandhi).
