The passage examines whether obesity will lead to depression or vice versa. Firstly, the researchers gathered large-scale, individual-level data from the UK Biobank and looked into several genetic variants. 73 genetic variants connected to high BMI with higher risk of serious diseases and 14 with the same body fatness but lower odds of negative metabolic consequences were analyzed. They both affect psychological mechanism but the former also has a detrimental impact on the body. Secondly, they looked at participants’ hospital data and survey answers. Lastly, by excluding individuals with family history of depression and repeating the tests in another project, the study confirmed that high BMI would lead to poor body image and depressive mood. Furthermore, the mental impact of obesity on women is stronger than men. Yet, the lack of diversity and unconfirmed data limits the study.
