In modern day kids growing up with computer games has become a norm. Some people argue that youngsters gain useful skills by playing computer games while other argue that it is a waste of time. This essay will look at both views and explain why I think playing computer games is a waste of time. There are many people of the opinion that computer games can help gain useful skills. The main reason is that it improves creativity. Computer games expand kids creative though process when they explore games built in imaginative virtual worlds. A research study in Harvard university proved that students with interest in gaming have higher IQs. The more time kids are allowed to play computer games, the better their creativity. The second skill that kids with gaming skills have is competitiveness. Gaming inculcates the sense of competition amongst kids, which is essential in preparing them for a highly competitive job market. On the other hand there are people of the opinion that, computer games are an utter waste of young peoples time, primarily because kids loose social interaction. Due to prolonged hours of playing addictive games on computers or video consoles, kids are not only loosing out on social interaction with their friends but also with their parents and grandparents leading to poor family relationships. Secondly, spending longer hours on gaming is leading to poor health conditions. Eyes and back of kids bodies are severely strained. We are noticing more and more young kids wearing eye glasses due to long hours of starting at gaming consoles. Is this really worth the health hazards? Certainly not. I am of the opinion that computer games are complete waste of time. If computer games can be banned kids can spend more time reading books and increase time in playing outdoor sports. This not only improves physical fitness, but also improves social interactions, possibly leading to well rounded development of a kid. Reading books significantly improves knowledge on a wide variety of topics where computer games may have a very limited scope.
