Some people say cultural traditions are destroyed when they are used as money-making attractions aimed at tourists. Others say this is the only way to save such traditions. AaP5M
People have differing views about whether the act of generating profits from traditional customs is destroying or helping preserve them. I believe that it would be extremely beneficial to use local customs in making money. On the one hand, there are certain advantages of earning money by using conventional customs. Firstly, visiting tours can be a helpful way for governments to promote the local customs. For example, foreigners who pay a visit to Vietnam will have opportunities to immerse themselves in the abundance of the local cuisine by enjoying many decadent dishes such as Banh mi, Pho, Banh xeo. The promotion of local customs through tourism will not only give rise to greater integration but also mutual standing between people from different cultures. Secondly, tourism is an effective way to earn money, which is particularly helpful for developing countries given that they are in dire need of revenues to boost the economy. By earning huge sums from tourism, governments will have more money to spend on key fields and improve the living standard for the whole community. On the other hand, there are several disadvantages of developing tourism for business purposes. The principal issue is that in order to attract tourists, some tourism companies may strive to modify the local traditions and customs. If that was the case, tourism would no longer be a way of promoting the local custom, but a potential destroyer to the local traditional cultures. Another problem is that when visiting heritage sites, visitors from abroad can be ill-mannered and cause harm to those sites. In Vietnam, for example, there are cases in which foreign tourists are caught spitting gum and littering in public visiting places. In conclusion, I would argue that governments should be aware of the potential harms before benefiting from traditional customs.
