Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages? rDN22
According to numerous experts for a child to start learning a foreign language at primary school is better than learning at secondary school. In Turkey students are beginning to learn a foreign language at forth grade which is the senior year of primary school and if we check the amount of the people who knows foreign language in Turkey, we will see that it is almost 25%. Hence, I am on the same page with experts.
It is known that as young as the child it is easier for her/him to learn new information so, this is the first and the most important advantage of starting at primary school. The other advantage is meanwhile learning it is better to study for longer years so as in this experiment, at the end of the secondary school, students’ level in language might be as their mother tongue. But if we start the process of learning from secondary school this could only be a dream.
On the other hand, forcing students to learn in many different areas while they are so young can be overwhelming for them. Because primary school is where they start their academic life and if we add up more lectures to deal with it may cause to lose their interest. This would be the one and merely disadvantage.
Overall, I think it would be better if students start to learn foreign language at primary school. In my own experience of learning foreign language, I wish I also started to learn before than I started. I wish I started at kindergarten. Because as I grew up, I have already heard tabus and I was prejudice over any foreign language.
