portrayal of violence in lear
portrayal of violence in lear lxByK
The play uses violence as a tool to criticize human nature, social and political issues. In addition to these aspects, Edward bond demonstrates the things leads humans to violence. Reader and audience is able to see the effects of violence and what causes their rage and frustration.
In the play, there is struggle with power. Every person who gets in charge starts to fight with their ego. Even if they claim that they are different, and they have good intentions, they are doing the same things. While Lear was the leader, everyone including her daughters criticized him, his building a wall, his being cruel. After Lear taken down daughters, Cordelia built the wall again with saying I am doing something different, I have to protect everyone. After someone gets in charge, they want to maintain their position, ego and power overthrown ideals and politics. This frustrates them, and they become more and more violent. Also, society puts responsibilities on individual, trying to fulfill those responsibilities is exhausting. To give a clear example, Bond demonstrates what cause violence and what can be the resolution, particularly on Lear. He was trying to fulfill his requirement which are protecting her society and girls, but he was so focused on his mission of gaining power he closed himself to outer world. He was not only building walls around the city but also in his mind. Likewise, he was eager to sacrifice people to get things done but when he sacrificed by her daughters who want his position the walls in his mind crashed he realized what he has done both himself and everyone around him. The scene when he realized the vulnerability of human nature was when his daughter died, and he saw her fragile bod on the floor lying in blood. He realized that the more you built walls, the more others want to destroy those walls, which leads both sides to violence. Also in the play, there are two extreme sides, one is the gravediggers boy and the other is her wife Cordelia. Boy is open to everyone and everything, which leads to his destruction. And Cordelia is filled with anger to leaders and society. She claims she is different, but she has the same walls of Lear. She is blinded by her anger, which leads to violence.
Bond criticizes the blindness to reality and losing identity for power. Hate, ego, power cause clash between individuals and leads to a vicious cycle of hate and revenge. In conclusion, Bond gives a solution through Ben who is trying to unite everyone and while doing that he is ready to sacrifice himself. He wants the greater good for everyone, not self-centred like daughters, Cordelia, Lear, they all had their problems which lead them, they wanted to be in charge of themselves, but Ben shows how it should be. Leader should be open, uniting, not angry but able to see people as fragile individuals and work for their greater good. This helps both leader and society.
