One day, as Edgar Linton fell ill and nearing death, Heathcliff brought Nelly and Cathy back to Wuthering Heights and held them captive until he married Cath Linton. Edgar died shortly after their marriage, and his death was quickly followed by the death of the ailing Linton. And Heathcliff achieved his goal. Heathcliff now owned both Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. Forcing Cathy to live in Wuthering Heights and act like an ordinary maid, she rents Thrushcross Grange to Lockwood Horrified to hear this, Lockwood terminated his tenancy at Thrushcross Grange and returned to London. But six months later he visited Nelly and wanted to learn about other developments in the story. Although Cathy initially mocked Hareton's ignorance (Heathcliff ended Hareton's training after Hindley died), Cathy had grown to love Hareton while living together in Wuthering Heights. Everything he saw reminded Heathcliff of Catherine. Heathcliff died soon after. Hareton and Cathy inherit Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange and plan to marry.
