The student’s fees are paid by the governments in some countries meanwhile in other countries,
students have to support themselves. The countries which can provide free university education are
mostly developed and rich ones and it is still hard for poor countries to give everyone of their citizens to
have free education.
If the governments do not charge for universities, the rate of graduated students will be raised. Most
of the students cannot continue their studies because of the financial problems. The cost of attending
universities is high for them and some families are not in position to recover all the cost.
Also free universities can make students’ burden lesser. Even though you got into university and
parents support you, it might not be enough. As mention before, the costs are very high. Some parents
can only cover part of it. As a result, some students need to do part-time jobs and earn money to pay for
their tuitions and rent. However if there are no charges for them, the stress will be relieved and can
focus more on their studies. As a consequence, higher grades will be obtained.
Nevertheless, there are also negative effects of charges free universities. People might not take
university education seriously anymore. Since they are free, they might not care about passing the exam
or to study hard.
As for the government, it is hard to make a university provided with study materials when there is no
income from the students. Some support materials might be very expensive and there is also a risk of
damaging. The students do not need to pay for them so they might not use them carefully.
In conclusion, the drawbacks overweigh benefits. It may not have many problems in short term but in
long run, big issues might be raised. It is not possible for the governments to cover all the costs of many
students and provide all the facilities at the same time. the downgrade of education may result since
students will not study hard.
