Does Canada have an individualistic or collectivist culture?

According Hofstede theory about cultural dimension, the dimension related Individualism and Collectivism (IDV) considers people’s connection within society. In a high IDV culture, which means individualistic society, people do not a strong relationship with the others who do not belong their family. In other words, they care about their parents, their relatives such as uncle, aunt, and so on; however, they do not pay attention on their classmates. Moreover, people in this kind of culture expect personal opinions, freedom and privacy. Then, they are usually conscious of the word “I”, and encourage debate. In contrast, a society having low IDV, which means collectivist culture, respects the group’s ideas, encourages keeping harmony among members, and builds skills together. If your opinion is different with the other members in group, and this may damage harmony, so you will keep silent. Therefore, they tend to use “We” instead of “I”, and do not give negative comments to other people. In addition, they do not usually refuse an invitation or disagree with group’s decisions. Based on the information in class, I want to research Individualism versus Collectivism because of three reasons. Firstly, this dimension is popular and obvious. As its clear characteristics, I can identify Canada’s cultural dimension which is individualistic society. Canada, which has the same thinking as the other western and developed countries, encourages frequently personal ideas and freedom. Secondly, I wonder if my identification is correct in the context of increased immigration. In fact, Canada is a multicultural country, there are a lot of people who are from collectivist culture, for example Vietnam or China, so does their culture affect native culture? Finally, the experiences from this research are helpful to my future plan. Because I come from the country that is typically collectivist culture, it is sometimes difficult when I work with people from individualistic society. Therefore, the information related this dimension might give me a meaningful experience. To sum up, I do this research of IDV because its obviousness, the question about immigration and the necessary knowledge.
