Although it is generally illegal, physical punishment continues in many countries. Some argue that parents should have the right to punish their children in this way. Do you agree or disagree?

Over the past few decades, numerous laws have been enacted to protect children’s rights specially against any type of physical punishment. Some believe that children’s physical punishment by parents should be exempt from the aforementioned set of laws. This essay completely disagrees with this opinion and believes that no amount of physical harm is accepted as a disciplinary act for kids. In this essay we will discuss the reasons for this disagreement, followed by a detailed conclusion. Firstly, any type of physical disciplinary act can damage children’s psychological health. In other words, a physical punishment can scar a child’s mind in many known ways. In accordance with the result of research carried out by a group of psychologists in Germany, the children who experienced physical punishments tend to have less self-steam, and are less social in comparison to children who did not have such experiences. That is why it is important to practice more efficient and less harmful methods when it comes to discipline a child. Secondly, physical punishments can encourage other violent behaviors. Simply put, children’s minds are delicate and sensitive to the upbringing stimuli specially in early growth stages when they absorb behavioral patterns that shape their characteristics. When experienced a physical punishment, the child’s mind accepts the violence as an acceptable reaction to respond to a wrong-doing. Thus, children with repeated physical punishment experiences have tendency to become more violent youngsters in the future. To conclude, physical disciplinary acts of any kind can leave deep scars in children’s subconscious leading to many further problems like low self-steam, antisocialism and violence. These scars usually take enormous time, effort and resources to heal. I strongly believe that modern psychology has introduced more appropriate methods that can preserve children’s mental health and help nature and nurture them with love and care they deserve.
