And millions of Afghans face acute malnutrition and starvation in the coming months. Afghans also remain at a heightened risk of terrorist attacks, such as the August 2022 bombing of a mosque and the September 2022 bombing of the Russian Embassy, both in Kabul, allegedly perpetrated by the Islamic State. Hunger is soaring for millions of families being plunged into poverty as the economy collapses after conflict. 50% of the population needs humanitarian aid. 97% of the population is at risk of sinking into poverty in 2022.
