The chart depicts the proportion of households in owning and renting a place in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, it can be observed that there is an upward trend in households that are owned whereas households that are rented witnessed a gradual decline over the period of time.
In particular, in 1918, there was a huge difference between the households rented and households owned with own households accounted for only 23% and rented accommodation to reach the highest of all. ( accounting for 75%). Taking a closer look, it is quite evident that the percentages of owned houses and rental houses remain constant for the years 1939 and 1953.
Furthermore, In 1971, both rented and owned accommodation remained at par compromising of 50%.
