Social media has deeply infiltrated into everyone’s life and is believed to be replacing our face-to-face human interaction. The communication styles have changed, the rules of preferred communication methods have drastically evolved to reflect the changing times. Although the medium of communication channels has reduced the distance between the world, I think we are farther apart than we have ever been. There are plenty of advantages of the use of social media that has benefitted a range of professions, raised awareness on social and environmental causes, enhanced experiences that has brought people closer irrespective of where they are in the world. Examples include study sessions that are frequently happening on social networking websites during the current pandemic through live streaming services. Therefore, learners around the world now can have free access to online classes on such sites. Although individually, I believe that social media has bridged the gap where an individual member of the society can easily connect with their high school friends, relatives that they lost touch with, however, as a society this has widened the gap as we are more focused on comparing our lives with that of others, we portray a certain image on social media however, that is not evident in real everyday life. As a society we are interested in people and things that based on Instant gratification, cyber bullying, cybercrimes, losing interest in people as there are so many other options available so, I think we are unable to build long-sustaining relationships that were part of a life before the advent of social media. Furthermore, millennial children are watching television earlier than their counterparts, resulting in shorter attention spans, getting into trouble at school, taking drugs and asserting their individuality strongly. In conclusion, while there are advantages to social media when used in the right way, I think the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.
