University of Chicago scientists have discovered a way to make a material that is produced like plastic but conducts electricity like metal.
In the October 26 issue of the journal Nature, an article was published about how a material that conducts electricity very well despite the irregular arrangement of molecules with respect to each other was made during the research.
John Anderson, professor of chemistry at the University of Chicago, said: "Although this discovery goes against all the rules we know about this conductivity, it could be extremely useful. In principle, this substance that conducts electricity, is easily formed and is very strong in everyday conditions allows the production of a completely new material. ".
One of the attractive features of the material is its ease of processing. For example, metals must usually be melted down to get the right shape for a chip or device, which limits their use because other components of the device must withstand the heat required for processing.
