As young people have become more educated, it is getting harder to find a highly qualified and reasonably paid job nowadays. One of the reasons might be the economic difficulties that some countries experience in recent years such as political crises and natural disasters. As a result, many people find it challenging to get work due to the competition for fewer job positions but a higher number of candidates.
The economic crisis is one of the main reasons why young people find it hard to get a job. Due to that, a lot of people lose their current job and start looking for any job, which could be either less paid one, or one which requires fewer qualifications. At this point, they start to compete with the younger generation, who have just entered the labor market. University graduates suffer to meet the employers’ expectations for work experience that they could get from more skilled people. For example, if a science museum has a vacancy position in its science department, an experienced teacher would be a preferable candidate rather than just a graduated student with no skills.
Another reason for less working young people might be the limited practical skills that are provided in the universities. Because of that, many people graduate with only theoretical knowledge of the subjects and find it very difficult to integrate into the working field. Therefore the employers prefer hiring people with practical skills rather than those with only a theoretical base. For instance, one of my closest friends who graduated in theoretical physics got rejected from several workplaces just because she didn’t have as much experience as the other candidates.
In conclusion, the economic crises that some countries are dealing with and the lack of practical skills gathered in university results in a more competitive environment in the labor market for young people.
