Gender issues in modern society
Gender issues in modern society WlB2a
Gender related issues and gender equality are something that I personally live and feel as a matter of great importance; I have personal, academic and professional experience on gender issues, gender identity and gender roles, as well as academic knowledge and interest in gender and kinship. During my Master’s Degree I specialized in kinship anthropology, self-consciousness and relatedness based on gender roles and gender expectations; my main interest is to understand how people build their self-consciousness and the relation with other human beings and with society in relation to their gender. Thanks to my current studies on migrations, I could also deepen my knowledge and my personal awareness about privilege and equality: I believe that all the discourses about gender equality cannot be separated from the migration issue and they cannot ignore the inequalities, not only between men and women, but also between European and non-European men and women.
As an anthropologist, I am particularly interested in gender roles and kinship, and I have an approach that has great consideration of individual perceptions and habitus, even though I do not ignore statistic data and I believe that an interdisciplinary method is necessary. Thanks to my academic experience, I am also able to do bibliographic and fieldwork research, collect and analyze data and information, elaborate presentations, solutions and social projects. I have been the event planner and the secretary of SAT Pink for six months, so I have familiarity with event organization and with secretary tasks, such as meeting organization, data and reports cataloguing, relations with service users.
During my previous experiences I noticed that too often public institutions in Italy lack an inclusive approach and a deep consideration of women and gender non-conforming individualities, statistics and needs, also because of the insufficient preparation about gender issues among offices and public operators. However, I strongly believe that gender is pervasive of every person’s life and thus cannot be ignored when talking about families, workplaces, policies, health care, and much more.
