Water Pollution: A Hidden Environmental Danger

Water Pollution: A Hidden Environmental Danger 73
The pollution of water bodies such as rivers, lakes and seas is a huge concern not just for the environmentalists but for the common man as well. If we do not take steps to curb pollution, we may be accelerating the effects of global warming. The emission of toxic substances into the environment is called pollution. Not only is pollution harmful to the environment but to all living organisms as well. Air pollution is an ongoing threat that we are already facing, but the threat of water pollution is far more severe. Water pollution not only endangers human lives but the lives of aquatic species as well. Many studies have indicated that pollution of water leads to oxygen deprivation in the water bodies, which in turn can cause the fishes to die. A lot of factories emit their wastes into nearby water bodies which results in the poisoning of water. Human activities such as washing clothes and throwing wastes make matters much worse. In our country, the problem of water pollution is more serious. Thousands of waste gets collected in the Ganga and Yamuna river every day. In some Indian festivals, people end up piling statues, plastic, flowers and whatnot into the ocean. We must understand that water is our sustenance. We need water to survive. Therefore, it is important that we protect our natural resources at all costs. We should consciously try not to pollute the water environment and stop others from doing so. Education is key to awareness.
